I witnessed a resurrection today! – A Reflection

E-mail Print PDF

MUMBAI, SEP. 06: I witnessed a resurrection today! At the Tata Memorial Hospital.  A man who died 40 years ago was resurrected by some of the best cancer surgeons in the country in an auditorium full of present and budding cancer surgeons.

I like to avoid going to meetings on Sundays but I am grateful that Dr Anthony J.F.  Sequeria persuaded me to attend this one.

I went also because though I had heard a great deal about Dr Ernest Borges, I never had the good fortune of covering him or even seeing him. He died prematurely, six months short of his 60th birthday at the age of 59, the very year I finished college and nine months before I joined the Times of India. Else, I am certain I would have gotten to meet him as I did many eminent medical men, including the great Dr Shantilal J Mehta.

And today, more than 40 years after he died and on the eve of his 100th birthday, they truly resurrected him. Over nearly two hours, doctor after doctor recalled anecdote after anecdote that brought out the surgeon, mentor and role model that Dr Ernest Borges was to a whole generation of budding cancer surgeons. He came alive in that auditorium.

Dr Rajan Badwe, the present director, past directors like Dr Rao and Dr Praful Desai, the legendary Dr Lusito DeSouza, founder and managing trustee of the Shanti Avedna Hospice for dying cancer patients, Dr Eustace DeSouza and Dr Anthony Sequeira, Secretary of the Dr Ernest Borges Memorial Fund, and Dr Ernest’s daughter Anita Borges all brought him to life as colleague, teacher, guide, husband, father…One did not even realize that the meeting which was to have ended at noon ended at a quarter past one, such were the anecdotes they told.

They talked of his humility, his integrity and his equanimity, the fusion of science and religion and human values in him, his belief that the past is history, the future is uncertain and today is a present from God, to be valued and appreciated to the utmost, a man who believed like George Bernard Shaw that his life was “no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”
