RAICHUR, NOV. 11: A rally cum Rastha Roko (road blockade) agitation was held by the students, staff and management of St. Mary’s group of institutions, Raichur, north Karnataka on 7th Nov. Federation of Minority Education Managements, all India Christian People’s Forum, various organizations, well wishers and parents joined the peaceful agitation. Staff members, parents and students squatted on the road demanding justice. They demanded cancellation of the allotment of Petrol Bunk/Gas Filling Station proposed to build in front of the St. Mary’s School Convent School, Raichur. Students lined up on either sides of the road leading to the main traffic island, shouting slogans to redress their grievance. The town traffic was held up for nearly two hours. The police persuaded the agitators to give up the blockade and make a way for the traffic. The unrelenting agitators made the District Collector to come down to receive the memorandum. The same was handed over at the proposed petrol bunk. It was observed that neither D.C. nor the town administration was least interested in resolving the issue. “The agitating girls and parents remained firm shouting slogans and demanding the cancellation of allotment order of the petrol bunk/gas filling station near their school”, informed the local Superior, Sr. Kantha. The memorandum insisted on two major demands: 1. Re-examination of all ‘No Objection Certificates’ (NOC’s) issued by the various departments for the establishment of petrol bunk/gas filling station near the school. 2. A written statement from the Deputy Commissioner /District administration stating that if petrol bunk/gas filling station if established, will cause health hazards to girls studying in the neighboring six educational institutions. Later a press conference was addressed by Fr. Thomas Michael, President of Federation of Minority Educational Managements of Raichur. He enlightened the services of the institutions and appealed one all to protect the interest of 120 years old institution. Convent Superior Sr. Kanta Salve appealed the D.C. to reconsider his stand in the larger interest of Girl Students’ community. Sam Sunder Raj, President of ALL Indian Christian Peoples Forum appealed the press and public to support the cause and thanked all for their timely participation.
