BELLARY, NOV. 20: Sumanahalli mission will build 20 houses for flood the victims in the Cowl Bazar area of Bellary city.

Bishop of Bellary Henry D’Souza blessed and laid the foundation stone on Nov. 17 signaling the launching of the project.

Sumanahalli mission led by Fr. George Kannanthanam, cmf, made an extensive survey of the flood affected area in Bellary and identified 20 most deserving families, many of them with physically challenged persons.

The construction work is taken up under the leadership of the cathedral parish priest Fr Charles D’Souza with the active participation of the beneficiaries.

The entire north Karnataka and parts of coastal and Malnad regions were badly hit by one of the worst rains the State has witnessed in a long time.

The floods that followed the torrential rains caused unprecedented misery to lakhs of people.

Many lives were lost; houses, properties and crops destroyed. Over 1,200 villages were affected and quite a few were totally washed away.

Rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations for the affected people are a gigantic task and it will take months, if not years.

The Diocese of Bellary distributed relief material to over 4,500 affected families through BDDS, assisted by Caritas India and many local donors.
