By Fr Mari Joseph

BELLARY, MAR 14: The International Women’s Day was celebrated on Sunday, March 14 at Mahila Dhama under the auspices of the Diocesan Laity Commission.

The programme began with lighting the traditional lamp by two little girls Akki and Anusha. The meet was declared open by Bishop of Bellary Henry D’Souza.

“Women are not second class citizens. They are equal in dignity to men. Both men and women together reflect the dignity and beauty given by the creator”, declared Bishop D’Souza.

“Only through quality education of women can we usher in a new society of dignity and respect for all men and women” insisted the Bishop.

In his speech, Child Development Project Officer of Bellary, Mr. Somashekarappa stated that development has to start from homes, then only, it will reach throughout the society. He explained the various govt. projects such as Bhgyalasksmi Yojane for girl child and Mahila Abhyudaya Yojane etc. and women to benefit from them.

Advocate Ms. Ramadevi narrated the odds such as female feticide and infanticide which a woman has to face in order to survive in the society. She urged all women to benefit from the recent progressive legal support measures to assert for their rights.

Earlier, the Commission Secretary, Fr. Mari Joseph welcomed the gathering and women activist Ms. Rufina Briganza thanked the participants who numbered about 200.
