BELGAUM, AUG. 26 (SAR NEWS): Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, August 25, assured a Christian delegation stringent action against Khanapur Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, Prahlad Remani, for his alleged anti-Christian remarks during Independence Day celebrations at Khanapur, August 15.

Bishop Peter Machado of Belgaum along with other Christian leaders met Yeddyurappa as soon as he landed at Sambra Airport on his visit to the city, August 25. Bishop Machado conveyed to the chief minister the hurt feelings of the Christians after Remani’s broadside against the community.

“Remani’s words that all Christians should be weeded out of the country have hurt the Christian community very much,” Bishop Machado told the chief minister. “The Christians will surely forgive Mr. Prahlad Remani if he apologises…”

The chief minister in turn expressed his regret over Remani’s “insensitive remarks”.

Addressing media persons here, Yeddyurappa said he would direct Remani to apologise to the Christians unconditionally, failing which, the BJP may take action against him.

Bishop Machado thanked the chief minister for his immediate efforts to undo the damage caused by his party member.

The Christian delegation comprised Fathers George Lopez, Joseph Chenakala and Oscar D’Souza, Girgol Rodrigues, Clara Fernandes and others.

Meanwhile, the issue has taken a political turn as the working president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, D.K. Shivakumar, who was in Belgaum, August 25, demanded immediate sacking of Remani.
