CBCI To Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Pastoral Visit of Pope John Paul II To India

altNEW DELHI, JAN 24 (CBCI): The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India [CBCI] will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the pastoral visit of Pope John Paul II to India. These Silver Jubilee Celebrations will be presided over by the Papal Envoy, His Eminence Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor. The following is the statement issued by Oswald Cardinal Gracias, President of CBCI:

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India is going to hold from February 1-11, 2011 the Commemorative Celebrations of 25th Anniversary of the First Pastoral Visit of Pope John Paul II to India.  These Silver Jubilee Celebrations will be presided over by the Papal Envoy, His Eminence Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor. Besides being in Delhi, he will visit Ranchi, Calcutta, Kerala and Mumbai and he will be accompanied by His Excellency Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio to India, His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, President of CBCI and His Eminence Telesphore Cardinal Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi.

As part of these Commemorative Celebrations there will be a release of the Jubilee Souvenir, unveiling and blessing of the Statue of Pope John Paul II in the premises of the Apostolic Nunciature, of the Sacred Heart Cathedral (Delhi) and of the Holy Name Cathedral (Mumbai), Meeting with the Heads of various Christian Churches, a Symposium on Pope John Paul II and his teachings, as well as a Meeting with the Religious Leaders of Other Faiths. The Message of late John Pope Paul II is still relevant and comes alive not only in the hearts of the Catholics in India but in every one of the Indian people whom he has touched with love and profound respect and admiration for diverse cultures and religious traditions of our country during his Pilgrimage of Peace from February 1-10, 1986.
