BELLARY, JAN 28: “Christians in Karnataka are utterly disappointed and feel let down by the Justice B K Somashekara Commission report, appointed by the state government to investigate the church attacks of 2008”, said Bishop of Bellary Henry D’Souza.

The Justice B K Somashekara Commission, appointed by the state government to investigate the church attacks of 2008, has given a 'clean chit' to the BJP, Sangha Parivar and the state government.

The Commission utterly failed to identify the criminals who ransacked the churches and attacked church personnel.

“There is no basis to the apprehension of petitioners that politicians, BJP,  Sangh Parivar and the state government are directly or indirectly involved in the attacks”, the commission has said in its final report submitted to Chief Minister today.

“The commission which could state the motive for attacks as circulation of derogatory literature with ‘insulting attitude’ against Hindus and issues of conversion were the main reasons, how could it fail to identify the culprits behind the attacks?” asked Bishop.

In its interim report, submitted the earlier, the Commission has stated that certain organizations affiliated to the Hindu fanatical organizations were behind some of the attacks.

The churches were attacked in Mangalore, Udupi, Chikamagalur, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Davangere in 2008.

The commission began its investigation towards of the end of 2008 and held several sittings in Mangalore, Bangalore, Davangere, and Udupi.
