Legal Literacy Helps To Promote Human Dignity and Freedom: Bishop

E-mail Print PDF

BELLARY, JUNE 20: “Human dignity and human freedom are God’s precious gifts to humanity. Legal literacy helps to appreciate and promote these gifts”, declared Bishop of Bellary Henry D’Souza.

Bishop D’Souza was giving opening message at the two-day diocesan seminar on constitutional and human rights held at Kroot Auditorium on June 20-21 at Bellary today.

“The constitution of India not only guarantees every citizen the right to life, personal freedom, speech, assembly, movement, residence, occupation and religion; it also guarantees fundamental rights of minorities to establish and administer educational institutions”, Bishop added.

Bishop D’Souza urged 78 participants who were priests, religious and lay leaders to be aware of their rights and to promote rights awareness more especially among the disadvantaged sections of the society.

The two-day seminar was animated by Supreme Court advocate Fr. PD Mathew and was organized by Bellary Diocese Board of Education (BDBE).

“Majority of our people are ignorant of the laws and legal rights. So they are exploited by the powerful in society. Enjoyment of legal rights is necessary for the development of human personality”, stated the Jesuit priest Fr. Mathew.

“It is the sacred duty of every individual to know the laws of the country and to observe them, so that everyone can enjoy rights and justice in every aspect of life”, added the social activist.

Fr. Arokianathan, secretary of BDBE coordinated the entire programme, which appreciated by all.
