E-mail Print PDF

Greetings from Madrid! World Youth Day 2011 is a Catholic event held over six days from August 16–21, in Madrid, Spain expected to attract over a million youth from all over the world to express their unity and solidarity in faith.
Pope Benedict XVI will preside over the main events Aug. 18–21 and lead the youth to greater personal commitment to Christ and the Church.
The World Youth Day is one of the primary means by which the Church proclaims the message of Christ to and expresses its concern for young people. With Mass, cultural programs, catechesis sessions, and events with Pope Benedict XVI World Youth Day welcomes all of the world´s youth to share in this incredible testimony of the Catholic faith.
Spanish bishops, including Madrid's Metropolitan Archbishop, Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela will preside over the inaugural Eucharist.
During the celebrations, the world youth will be helped to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through catechesis, prayer and the liturgical celebrations.
The theme of the WYD 2011 is –“Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith”(cf. Col 2:7)
Saint Rafael Arnáiz Barón, Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Isidore the Laborer, Saint Maria Torribia, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint John of Avila, Saint Rose of Lima, Saint John of the Cross, and Blessed Pope John Paul II are chosen as co-patrons of World Youth Day 2011.
Pope Benedict XVI had announced the location of the event at the final Mass in Australia at Sydney's Royal Randwick Racecourse during World Youth Day 2008.
It will be the second time that Spain will host the event. World Youth Day 1989 was held from August 15–20 1989 at Santiago de Compostela, in north Spain.
