MADRID, Spain, AUG. 19: (HDS): “Be prudent and wise, build your lives upon the firm foundation which is Christ”, urged Pope Benedict XVI here in Madrid on Aug. 18.

Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Madrid yesterday to the thunderous cheers of hundreds of thousands of youth crowding the down town square Plaza de Cibeles and the streets to welcome him.

King Juan Carlos I of Spain, and his wife, Queen Sofia, at the airport to greet the Pope. Also, present Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela, the archbishop of Madrid and the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, and Spanish President José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

The Holy Father welcomed the youth of the world to Madrid, the capital of Spain, now the “capital of the Youth of the world” he declared to the sea of youth cheering him lustily.

The Pope first greeted in Spanish and then addressed the youth in different languages such as English, French, German, Italian and others.

"It is always a good thing to keep seeking," he told the youth; "Above all, seek the Truth, which is not an idea or an ideology or a slogan, but a person: Christ, God himself, who has come into our midst! You rightly wish to plant your faith in him, to ground your life in Christ”, he added.

“This wisdom and prudence will guide your steps, nothing will you make you fear and peace will reign in your hearts. Then you will be blessed and your happiness will influence others”, assured the 83-year Pope to the youth of the world.

Urging youth to be models to other youth by founding their lives on Christ, making them “wonder what the secret of your life is”, and they in turn “will discover that rock which underpins the entire building is the very person of Christ”.

Lauding the relevance of the message of the Holy Father, the chairman of CBCI Youth Office, Archbishop Leo Cornelio said “The message is of great significance to the youth of India. When they are rooted in Christ, they can be better witnesses in the multi-religious context of India”.

The WYD 2011 concludes  with a Holy Mass presided over by the Potiff on Sunday, Aug. 21.
