Habemus Papam: Pope Francis is the new Supreme Pontiff

E-mail Print PDF

altMAR 14, 2013: Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio S.J., was elected Mar. 13, 2013 as Supreme Pontiff, the 265th successor of Peter, and has chosen the name Francis.

After puffs of white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and the declaration: “Habemus papam” (we have a pope), the large crowd, waving umbrellas and flags joyfully responded, “Viva il Papa!”  The new pope, aged 76, is the first non-European Pope in more than 1,200 years and the first member of the Jesuit order to lead the Church.

“I would like to thank you for your welcome,” the new Pope said from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. “My brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am.” Bowing down before the audience, he asked the audience to “pray for me” and thereafter imparted his blessing to “the city and the world”.

Pope Francis was born on 17 Dec. 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. On 20 May 1992, Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary of Buenos Aires. He became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires on 28 Feb. 1998. He served as President of the Bishops' Conference of Argentina from 2005 until 2011. He was created Cardinal by Blessed John Paul II in the consistory of 21 Feb. 2001.

The new Pope has to lead a Church with many challenges which intensified during his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, including a shortage of priests, growing competition from evangelical sects, sexual misconduct of church personnel and difficulties governing universal Church itself. Let us lift him up through our prayers.
