altBELLARY, 22 APRIL 2013 (Anthoniamma): The newly formed Bellary Diocesan Pastoral Council was inaugurated 22 April at the Bishop’s House, Bellary.

27 members attended the meeting and elected Mr. Felix Braganza of Fort parish as Vice President, Ms. Antoniamma of Cathedral parish as Secretary and Mr. Jeyasheelan of Pothnal parish as Joint Secretary.

As per the statutes, Bishop is the President of the Council and Vicar General is the ex-officio first Vice President.

In his inaugural message Bishop Henry D’Souza stated,”The opening of the newly constituted Diocesan Pastoral Council coincides with the golden Jubilee of the Vatican Council II which rightly recognized the role of the laity in the Church.”

“Pastoral Council is a collaborative structure intended to assist in providing effective pastoral care. In the year of Faith both the clergy and the lay faithful need to make a renewed effort to ensure lay people are made aware of their responsibility in the Church and are encouraged to exercise it”, Bishop added.

”Laity should not be afraid to exercise their God-given mission to serve the Church as equal members and assist the Church in proclaiming the Good News and transforming the world in to God’s kingdom”, Bishop insisted.

Young Catholic couple William and Jyothi from Shimoga enlightened the participants on the topic “Family apostolate in the Year of Faith”, and stressed on the need of helping Catholic families to be true to their specific mission, respecting human life in all its forms and stages.

The Council decided to double up efforts to provide effective pastoral care for families through faith formation of adults, Pre- Cana courses, summer camps for children and youth, and helping family members suffering due to alcoholism, substance abuse and other social evils.

Ms. Antoniamma led the gathering in prayer and Vicar General Fr. Chowrappa thanked all present.
