altBANGALORE, OCT 17: Fr. Gerald D’Souza, ofm (Joseph Michael Ignatius D’Souza), the architect of K. Mariammanahalli parish in Raichur district passed away last evening in Bangalore. He was 86.

And he died at 6.20 pm on Oct. 16, while he was residing at the Home for the Aged at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Bangalore.

Fr. Gerald was born on 1st Sep. 1927 in Bangalore.

Late Peter George D’Souza and Rose D’ Souza were his parents.

He was born in a large family with many siblings to keep company and he had 16 of them.

His father was a revenue Commissioner in the former State of Mysore. He did his schooling in St. Joseph’s European High School, Bangalore and Intermediate studies at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore.

He entered the Novitiate in Palmaner on 22nd Sep. 1953 and made his First Profession on 23rd Sep. 1954. He made his Solemn Profession on 30th Sep. 1957.

He was ordained priest on 17th Dec. 1961.

Record of service:

Parish Priest, Sacred Heart Church, Mudgal, Bellary diocese: 1963-1972

Director of Church Farm, Jawalgera: 1972-80

Guardian and Magister at St. Anthony’s Friary, Bangalore: 1980-83

Guardian of St. Louis Friary, Palmaner: 1983-1989

     Vicar of Atmajyoti, Mysore: 1989-1998

Guardian of St. Louis Friary, Palmaner, St. Louis Church, Palmaner: 1999-2003

Resident at St. Anthony’s Friary, Bangalore: 2005-2011

Resident at the Home for the aged, Little Sisters of the Poor: 2011- till death.

He grew old gracefully without many complaints. He was a simple friar who did not look for

position and status as a way of life.

Fr. Gerald was a self made person. For knowledge, he went to books and learned it on his own. When he was a lector in Palmaner, he read and studied the book of Fr. Finbar Connolly, “God, Man and the world” and he took religion classes for the Juniors with the support of this book. That was a kind of text book for most of his talks and retreats.

He was a good teacher of the English language. He did this for the Juniors with enthusiasm and élan from 1983-89 and in the later years.

Whether as the Guardian or Vicar or the Parish Priest or Director of a Farm, he was very faithful in his responsibility.

He was a friendly priest who had only good words about other priests.

During the last few years of his life in St. Anthony’s Friary, Bangalore, before going to spend the evening of his life in the Home for the Aged at the Little Sisters of the Poor, he spent most of his evenings in the friary chapel, listening to the confessions of people.

Fr. Gerald D’Souza has stepped into eternity peacefully and joyfully. May his soul rest in Peace!
