altBALLARI, 12 JUNE 2016:  The first convent of the Sisters of St. Anne of Phirangipuram was blessed and opened at Bellary on June 12, 2016.

Bishop Henry D Souza, Bishop of Bellary  formally welcomed Sisters of St. Ann’s of Phrirangipuram, Andhra Pradesh, to the Diocese of Bellary at a thanksgiving Mass and reception  at the Diocesan Library and Research Center, Cantonment, Ballari.

While addressing all those gathered at the occasion, the Bishop said “men and women of today need to courageously witness to Christ’s love and compassion fearlessly, no matter what the challenges are”.

“The courage of faith comes from the joy of the Gospel through encounter with Christ, who is the model and inspiration to love, to forgive and to serve with compassion” added Bishop.

The Bishop joyfully welcomed the sisters by garlanding each of them.

The sisters would be serving in the diocese by running a new home for the aged which is being built in the Jubilee Year of Mercy and also serve in the diocesan school.

The Congregation of Sisters of St. Ann’s Phirangipuram was founded by a lay widow, Venerable Gnanamma. The Sisters trace back the origin of the Congregation to Ballari as early as 1871 as their first candidates Arulamma and Agathamma were trained by the Good Shepherd Convent Sisters in Ballari under the direction of Fr. Arogyanathar the then priest of Ballari.

The superior general Mother Antonamma welcomed the gathering and introduced her congregation and the members of the new community.

The provincial superior Sr. Ignatius Suman thanked the gathering and introduced the sisters of the Ballari community - Sr. Mary Mathew, Sr. Hemalatha and Sr. Shobha Rani. The Sisters also help in the education mission in the Diocesan School, St. John’s at Fort, Bellary.

The celebration coincided with the anniversary of the Episcopal consecration of Bishop Henry D’Souza. Bishop completed 8 years of his Episcopate in Ballari.
