Pope Francis Leads The World’ Youth Day Celebrations

E-mail Print PDF

KRAKOW, AUG. 1: Pope Francis led the Catholic youth of the world during World Youth Day celebrations July 26-31 at Krakow, Poland.

Over 2 million Catholic youth from 187 countries participated in the global event.

The theme was: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt 5:7).

The youthful face of God's mercy can change the hearts of people who have lost hope”, Pope Francis said in his inaugural message. A young person who is touched by Christ is "capable of truly great things," the Pope told the mammoth gathering of youth at Blonia Park.

On the final day over 2 million youth participated in the open air Mass at Campus Misericordia.

The city of Krakow was veritably turned into a youth capital of the world. The youth made pilgrimages to the holy sanctuaries such as Jasna Gora of Black Madonna, the Divine Mercy Shrine and the Shrine of St. John Paul II.

Over 1000 youth from India participated along with Telesphore Cardinal Toppo, Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara and Bishop Henry D’Souza.
