“Mother Teresa – Best Bharat Ratna”; Leaders Laud Her Services

altBALLARI, SEP 10: Local leaders of Ballari lauded Mother Teresa as the “Best Bharat Ratna” and lauded her services to the poorest, last and the least, today at a public function held to celebrate the canonization of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the golden jubilee of the foundation of the MC Convent in Ballari.

Ever since the starting of the MC Convent and the asylum for the destitute, Mother Teresa had visited Bellary thrice and made it “hallowed city”.

Recalling the words of introduction of Mother Teresa by the then Secretary General Perez de Cuellar to UN General Assembly in 1985 Bishop quoted: “Now we have the privilege to have the most powerful woman in the world…She is the United Nations. She is peace in the world”, Bishop Henry D’Souza praised her as “the model and example as to what a human being can become and achieve”.

Bishop D’Souza emphasized as to how Mother Teresa saw the face of Jesus in the poor – “Seeking the face of God in everything, everyone, all the time, and his hand in every happening. This is what it means to be contemplative in the heart of the world. Seeing and adoring the presence of Jesus, especially in the lowly appearance of bread, and in the distressing disguise of the poor”.

He also insisted on the need of bringing love into all relationships families and institutions. Quoting Mother Teresa, “It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger than to relieve the loneliness and pain of someone unloved in our own home. Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start” he reminded.

Local MLA NY Gopalakrishna, Ballari city MLA Anil Lad, MLC KC Kondiah, former MLA Somashekar Reddy and many other dignitaries including Vicar General Fr. Paul Raj participated in the event and lauded the noble contribution of Mother Teresa to humanity.

Earlier Bishop Henry D’Souza, Bishop of Bellary presided over the concelebrated thanksgiving Eucharist.

A statue of St. Teresa of Calcutta was unveiled on the occasion.

The students of St. Philomena’s School presented a meaningful dance drama on the life and work of Saint Mother Teresa.

3-4 thousand people, mostly from economically poor background attended the programme and participated in the fellowship meal.

The chaplain of the MC Convent Fr. Maxim Dias and the MC Sisters ably assisted by the local leaders organized the programme meaningfully and effectively.

The programme was held at Bellary Arogya Mathe Shrine, of which Fr. Gnanapragasam T. is the Rector.
