43 New Extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Commissioned

43 new Extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion were commissioned at Bellary on Sunday, 18 June 2023.

Bishop Henry D’Souza presented a letter of appointment, a shawl and a copy of the New Testament to the candidates who participated in the day-long formation programme held at the Bishop’s House, Bellary.

43 lay persons and religious women from various parishes from all over the diocese joyfully participated in the day long program.

They were recommended by their respective parish priests in consultation the parish council members.

The session began with a brief prayer service led by Sr. Divya FS from Francis Xavier Convent of Cathedral Parish, Bellary.

Bishop Henry D’Souza in his introductory words said that every ministry in the Church is a call given by the Lord for the service in the Church. “It is an opportunity to edify, to exemplify and to proclaim the Lord who came not to be served, but to serve,” he reminded. Therefore, such a ministry needs sufficient spiritual, theological and practical preparation is a must to fulfill the ministry with knowledge and reverence.

Fr. Anil Kumar, Secretary of Liturgy Commission explained liturgical norms and gave practical tips to the participants.

Fr. William Prabhu OFM Cap, Superior of Pothnal Capuchin community and parish priest, St. Clare’s Church spoke on the Biblical and Theological Foundation of ministers of the Holy Communion.

He highlighted the importance of Extra-ordinary Ministries of the Holy Communion and explained in detail the guidelines to understand the sacredness of the ministry.

At the end of the session Bishop Henry D’Souza distributed the letters of appointment and presented the special shawls to be worn during the ministry.

Bishop of Bellary along with Frs. Anil Kumar, William Prabhu OFM CAP, P.V. Antony, Alphonse George concelebrated the Holy Eucharist for the participants.

Fr. PV Antony, the Diocesan Estate Manager and Fr. Alphonse George, Rector, Deeksha Bhavan Minor Seminary, Ms Sagaya organized the day’s program which concluded with the fraternal meal.
