A brief history of the parish
There have been few Catholics in Hospet for many years, possibly from the Vijayanagar Kingdom times, much before the Franciscan Missionaries took charge of the Bellary Mission. About the year 1920, Fr. Koperdraad, a Dutch Mill Hill Father, parish priest of Cowl Bazaar, served the community at Hospet and built a small chapel for the Catholics of Hospet town. Hampi and Kampli were its sub-stations. In the year 1947, Fr. Fidelis Magee ofm, went to Hospet as the first resident priest and lived in a rented house. The foundation stone for this church was laid by Fr. Justin ofm, the Provincial of the English Friars, during his visitation of the Mission in 1956. Fr. Fidelis Magee, as the parish priest, built the present church, which was blessed on 13 Jan 1960 by Bishop John Forest Hogan ofm, and converted the old chapel into a presbytery. Belfry was donated by one of the parishioners. The parish community hall was built during the time of Fr. Anthony Fernandes and it was blessed by Bishop Henry D'Souza.Construction of a larger church building is in progress under the leadership of present parish priest Fr.Charles Sunder Raj.
