A brief history of the parish
Mudgal is one of the oldest mission stations in the diocese and Mother parish to many parishes in Raichur District. There were Christians in Mudgal already during the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah of Bijapur. It is likely that the earliest converts were baptised by the Franciscans .In 1637 Thietines served in Mudgal and Raichur, At one period Raichur, which included Mudgal, numbered 6,500 Catholics. Priests of the Foreign Missions of Milan were also in-charge of the area and Fr. Ferrario looked after Raichur from Mudgal. The present Church was re-modelled and completed by Fr. Gerald D'souza OFM in 1971. Sisters of St. Ann of Providence came to the Parish in 1936. The present presbytery was built by Fr. Sylvester McGoldrick ofm. Seeing the importance of the education of the rural children, Fr. Lourdusamy T, started boarding for the boys. Fr. Chourappa Y.started Sacred Heart English Medium School. The church was renovated by Fr. Chowrappa Y. in 2007.Fr. M.D. Vincent renovated the parish hall with help from Manos Unidas. The newly built chapel at Karadral Tanda was blessed by Bishop Henry D'Souza on 24 May 2013.The Sacred Heart School building,supported by Indo-Espoir Association, was built when Fr.Alphonse George was the Manager. It was blessed by Bishop Henry D'Souza on 8 Dec. 2012. The school building is being extended by the present Manager Fr. Francis Chinnappa.
